Mat or Reformer Pilates – which method should you choose?
It is well known that Pilates improves core strength, flexibility, mobility, balance and muscle tone, however which method should you choose, Mat or Reformer? Since opening our new studio in Bullaun, we frequently get asked this question. Mat and Reformer workouts provide similar benefits, so it is no wonder that many (both Pilates beginners and regulars) are often confused about which method is right for them. The following sections explain the major differences and will help you decide which method is correct for your current abilities and goals.
Mat and Reformer workouts are both beneficial to building up your core stability and strengthening and toning your muscles. Both methods train you to initiate the movements from your core and will quickly benefit your posture, balance and coordination across your day-to-day activities. Mat classes use your body weight for exercises and the Reformer adds resistance to the Pilates exercises through the use of springs, cables and pulleys that form part of the Reformer apparatus.
Reformer Pilates
The Reformer is an apparatus which resembles a narrow bed with a spring-loaded sliding carriage. It also acts as a support system for the body by assisting it into proper form and posture. To build strength in the large muscle groups extra resistance can be added using the springs, or to challenge the stabilising muscles the resistance can be lowered. This means that the intensity can be varied considerably from one person to the next, making it an incredibly versatile piece of equipment to use and suitable for all, including those with limited range of movement or injuries. There is a greater repertoire of exercises available on the Reformer compared to Mat, providing far more variety. The Reformer can also provide a more challenging strength, endurance and cardiovascular workout than Mat classes, leading to visible results sooner...
Mat Pilates
Mat Pilates workouts are the basis for the entire Pilates system of exercises. A Mat class will work your legs, arms, abdominal, and all your back muscles. On the mat, your body weight provides resistance against gravity, making the workout challenging. Mat Pilates requires you to be in full control of your body, rather than relying on the assistance or support of the Reformer apparatus. Classes are designed to improve fitness, flexibility and posture as well as mental awareness, core strength and stability and hip mobility. If you have been advised by a medical professional to attend Pilates classes to address pain or injury (e.g. lower back pain, knee injury), we recommend that you first take Reformer classes before advancing to the Mat.
Which method should you choose?
Both teach you how to use your core, build strength and flexibility. While targeting specific muscle groups is possible on the mat, the combinations of exercises aren’t as varied as the reformer. The reformer is ideal for those with injuries.
In ten sessions you’ll feel a difference, in twenty sessions you’ll see a difference and in thirty sessions you’ll have a new body!
