Is Bowen therapy safe?

Bowen Therapy is safe for everyone, from newborn babies to the elderly with acute and chronic conditions. There are no known contra-indications from applying this gentle realigning, healing touch.

What do I need to bring?

Be prepared to provide your previous medical or surgical history. If you have them and if they are relevant please bring your scan/MRI reports, and list of medications. You may also wish to bring comfortable loose clothing.

How many visits will I need?

The balance and energy effects of this therapy are most evident after 3 consecutive treatments, with 1-week rest between them, however, the pain-relieving effects may be noticeable after the first treatment.

Most commonly, 2-5 treatments are adequate or satisfactory, especially in acute cases. With long term conditions or repetitive strain injuries, the body system may need systematic regular correction to counteract repetitive harmful activities.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Bowen therapy can be done directly on skin (with towels) or through light clothing.
If you choose to be treated directly on skin, modest underwear is recommended.
If you choose to be treated in light clothing, please ensure clothing is loose.

How do I make an appointment?

You can get in touch by phone ( 091 - 880995 or 086 - 1700738 ) or use the form under the contact page.

Do I have to be referred by a doctor?

No, the Galway Bowen Therapy Clinic can assess and treat without referral by a doctor.

Yes, many of our clients have colostomy bags and other implants e.g. ports on their bodies. Procedures can be performed lying on your back or seated whichever is more comfortable for you.

A session involves one or more 'procedures', each of which contains several sets of 'moves'. Between each set of moves the therapist will pause for as many minutes as are needed for the clients body to respond.

In contrast to other hands on disciplines where the practitioner imposes correction through manipulation, the Bowen technique allows the body to heal itself with minimal intervention.

Yes, we can perform all procedures on you in a seated position.

Yes, we treat many people who have had a mastectomy as a result of breast cancer. You may elect to have your treatment seated if it is more comfortable for you.

You can start immediately. Bowen therapy will not effect your treatment, however it is known to counteract the awful side effects of chemotherapy.

Everybody responds differently to Bowen therapy. A number of our clients suffering with neuralgia have reported vast improvements and even complete reversal of symptoms.

We see and treat patients for a wide range of conditions and diagnoses.  Please visit our Services for an extensive list of conditions treated.

The Galway Bowen Therapy Clinic is proud to have only experienced and fully qualified Bowen therapists on staff who have obtained and achieved qualifications in Bowen Therapy, First Aid and Anatomy & Physiology.

Although health insurance providers cover Bowen therapy in Australia, USA and UK, it is not currently covered by health insurance providers in Ireland. To determine if outpatient Bowen therapy services are covered under your plan we recommend that you contact and confirm with your insurance provider.

Call the clinic as soon as you become aware that you are unable to make an appointment. We will be happy to cancel your appointment and reschedule at a time that is more convenient for you.

A Bowen session may initiate a cascade of beneficial changes that may continue for several days. Applying other manipulative therapies e.g physiotherapy, massage or chiropractic during this time may interrupt this process and undermine the overall effectiveness of the Bowen work. Therefore we recommend that our clients wait a week before commencing any other manual therapy.

We encourage you to stand up and move every half hour on the day of the session. Moving will help the body to realign itself.

WALK: We suggest some simple exercise such as walking.

WATER: We recommend you increase your water intake for the next few days. Try to work up to 2 litres of water each day.

WAIT: Allow time for the session to work. We ask you to refrain from having any other bodywork for at least 5 days. Trust the technique. Bowenwork can take up to 10 days to fully integrate.

Do not apply heat or ice to an affected area.

Follow the exercises given and dietary recommendations (when provided).

Yes, in fact pregnant women benefit greatly from a session. Pregnant women with back pain may receive a Sacral procedure on demand.

No. Asthma sufferers may have the Respiratory procedure on demand. In fact, we teach all our asthmatic clients to perform the procedure on themselves.

We do not prescribe medication, nor do we provide advice on medication prescribed by someone else. Should you wish to alter your medication we suggest that you speak to your doctor.
